Forgotten Runways: A Guide to Abandoned and Little-Known Airfields

Authored by Paul Freeman | 2002 – 2026

Dedication: This project is dedicated to the memory of my father, Harris Freeman (1929-2010), whose unwavering support fueled my passion for aviation from early childhood.

Within the following sections, you will discover detailed accounts of airfields that have either vanished from the map or been left to the elements, along with the unique stories behind them.

The Motivation Behind the Project

As a pilot, I have always been captivated by the remnants of old airfields scattered across the country. My interest is driven by two primary factors:

  1. Safety: Identifying these sites provides critical options for pilots facing emergency landing situations.
  2. History: The narratives surrounding these forgotten strips are often deeply fascinating.

My obsession extends to all forms of flight:

  • As a Passenger: I spend my commercial flights scanning the terrain below for any sign of a hidden airfield.
  • As a Pilot: I actively seek to land at as many diverse airports as possible to gain a personal understanding of each location.
