I recently stumbled upon a post from a user explaining why they decided to cancel their Spotify subscription. What gripped me about this particular account was that it was written entirely from the listener's perspective.

While the platform's operational model is generally problematic for everyone involved, this perspective was unique. It forced me to pause and consider the user experience from the viewpoint of someone who doesn't create music. Usually, my opinions on Spotify are filtered through my lens as an artist.

The Paradox of Plenty

The core of the user's frustration was twofold:

  1. The algorithm was failing to provide meaningful recommendations.
  2. The over-availability of music was actually eroding their ability to appreciate it.

  • Locate obscure distributors for exclusive releases.
  • Send money orders or risky "well-hidden cash" through the mail.
  • Wait in anticipation, hoping the package actually arrived.

While this process seems absurd or even stressful by modern standards, it fostered something that is nearly impossible to replicate today: a profound sense of achievement and a tight-knit community.

We can almost quantify the "value" of a discovery using a simple conceptual formula:

Where:

  • AA = Availability (Ease of access)

As AA (Availability) approaches infinity, the overall Value (VV) of the discovery drops toward zero.


The Modern Pipeline

Today, the moment an underground demo is released, it is instantly beamed across every possible platform: Bandcamp, Spotify, Apple Music, and Instagram.

You can go to YouTube right now, type in any obscure sub-genre, and instantly find thousands of artists. While this is undeniably convenient, it simultaneously cheapens the entire experience.

I've noticed that I haven't discovered a band in years that has left a lasting impression the way those early finds did. I still own obscure t-shirts from bands that did a single print run a quarter-century ago. These physical objects possess a "weight"—a historical and emotional significance—that is impossible to recreate in a digital library.

I can't quite put my finger on the exact nature of that feeling, but it is undeniably missing.
