A game where you're an OS and have to manage processes, memory and I/O events

🖥️ You're the OS!

Welcome to a simulation where you step into the shoes of a computer's Operating System. Your primary objective is the orchestration of system resources to keep the machine running smoothly.

🕹️ Gameplay Overview

In this experience, you are responsible for the critical management of:

  • Processes: Scheduling and execution.
  • Memory: Allocation and tracking.
  • I/O Events: Handling input and output requests.

Warning: Efficiency is key. If you allow processes to remain in an idle state for an extended period, the user's frustration will peak, leading to a forced system reboot!

Play the game now: 👉 Official Web Version | itch.io Page

🛠️ Technical Setup

To get the project running locally, ensure you meet the following requirements:

  • Python 3.14 (Strict requirement; other versions may not work)
  • pipenv (For dependency management)
  • An empty .venv folder located at the project root.

[!TIP] If you need to install Python 3.14 without altering your global system settings, it is recommended to use pyenv.

Installation Sequence

# Synchronize dependencies including development tools
pipenv sync --dev

🚀 Execution Guide

The main branch is subject to instability. Use the following commands to launch the game in various modes:

CommandPurpose
pipenv run desktopLaunches the game as a native desktop application.
pipenv run webStarts the web-based version of the game.
pipenv run pylintExecutes the linter to check code quality.
pipenv run pytestRuns the suite of unit tests.

🧪 Sandbox Mode

Skip the main menu and jump straight into a specific stage. Place your config file in src/sandbox and run: pipenv run sandbox <module_path> (Example: For src/sandbox/myConfig.py, use pipenv run sandbox sandbox.myConfig).

🤖 Automation

You can drive the game using external scripts (originally implemented by @Wiguwbe).

⚠️ WARNING: Automation scripts can trigger rapid color changes on your monitor, which may be problematic for those with photosensitivity.

# Run a specific script with optional arguments
pipenv run auto script.py [args]

# View all available automation options
pipenv run auto --help

Refer to automation/skeleton.py for scripting guidelines.

🌐 Web Deployment

  • Build: pipenv run web build
  • Archive for itch.io: pipenv run web archive

📉 System Logic

The core loop of the game can be visualized as follows:

Mathematically, the risk of failure can be viewed as: If tidle>Threshold  ⟹  Reboot=True\text{If } t_{idle} > \text{Threshold} \implies \text{Reboot} = \text{True}If tidle>Threshold⟹Reboot=True
