Plein Air

Plein Air is a digital experience designed to provide a painting for right now, tailored specifically to your current geographic location and the immediate atmosphere surrounding you.

Plein air — French for "in the open air" — refers to the artistic practice of painting outdoors. It is the discipline of working directly in front of the elements, much like how Constable analyzed the clouds of Suffolk or Monet captured the shifting light on haystacks across different seasons and hours.

The philosophy is simple: light is ephemeral. It cannot be recalled from memory; it must be experienced in the moment. Consequently, the sky above you and the sky within the selected artwork share a synchronized mood—whether it is a long afternoon\text{long afternoon}long afternoon, a looming storm\text{looming storm}looming storm, or river fog\text{river fog}river fog.

🎨 Artistic Sources

The application draws from a diverse array of repositories to find the perfect match:

  • Curated Collection: A hand-selected group of public-domain works used as immediate primary options.
  • The Metropolitan Museum of Art: Queries for Modern, American, and European paintings based on the current season and weather.
  • The Art Institute of Chicago: A rich source of atmospheric and Impressionist works (e.g., Hopper, Caillebotte, Monet).
  • Cleveland Museum of Art: Provides European and American pieces accompanied by detailed curatorial notes.
  • Wikimedia Commons: Filtered by specific categories such as sunrise, fog, or snow for precise weather alignment.

⚙️ Technical Infrastructure

The system synchronizes environmental data with art archives using the following pipeline:

Logic Flow

The selection process follows a stochastic model where the probability of selecting any single source SSS is: P(S)=1nP(S) = \frac{1}{n}P(S)=n1 (where nnn is the total number of available sources).

To ensure variety, every single request triggers a random source. Users can click the title to identify the specific museum hosting the work.

🖼️ The Gallery & Management

The Plein Air Gallery allows users to browse the entire curated set. Within this interface, you can manage your experience:

  • Rate a painting
  • Hide a work from view
  • Discard painting from set (Marked for removal)

Debug Mode: If you are curious about the selection, the Debug feature explains why a specific painting was chosen.
