StreetComplete: Enhancing OpenStreetMap via Micro-Quests 🌐

StreetComplete is a specialized surveyor application designed to refine and expand the OpenStreetMap (OSM) database. Instead of traditional mapping, it gamifies the process of data collection.

The Core Mission: To identify gaps in geographical data and empower users to fill them through simple, on-site interactions.

🛠 How It Works

The application scans your immediate surroundings for missing information and presents these gaps as quests on an interactive map.

You don't need to open a complex desktop editor. The process is streamlined:

  1. Locate a quest on the map.
  2. Visit the physical site.
  3. Respond to a basic prompt.

The data is then uploaded to OSM under your specific user profile automatically.

The Workflow Logic

📊 App Specifications

FeatureDetail
Primary GoalImprove OSM data density
MethodologyQuest-based surveying
IntegrationDirect API upload (no external editor)
AccessibilityMulti-language support

Mathematical Representation of Improvement: If DDD represents the total map data and qqq represents a solved quest, the improvement can be viewed as: ΔMap Quality=∑i=1nqi\Delta \text{Map Quality} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} q_iΔMap Quality=∑i=1nqi

🌍 Global Reach

The app is accessible to a diverse global audience, supporting a vast array of languages including, but not limited to:

  • European: English (UK/US/AU), Deutsch, Français, Español, Italiano, Polski, Русский, Українська, etc.
  • Asian: 中文 (CN/TW), 日本語, 한국어, Tiếng Việt, ไทย, Indonesia, etc.
  • Other: العربية, فارسی, አማርኛ, Kiswahili, etc.

💻 Technical Insight

While the user sees a simple question, the app handles the tagging in the background. For example, a quest for a "bench" might look like this in the backend:

{
  "element": "node",
  "tag": "amenity",
  "value": "bench",
  "status": "missing"
}
