Today, we are thrilled to unveil TypeScript 7, a groundbreaking native port of the TypeScript compiler designed to be 10x faster!

"Since its inception, TypeScript has been dedicated to ensuring that JavaScript can scale to meet the needs of professional software development."

By integrating sophisticated type-checking and powerful tooling into the JavaScript ecosystem, TypeScript enabled the creation of high-quality, complex applications across various platforms. However, to truly scale for the future, we realized the toolset itself needed a massive performance leap.

🛠️ The Evolution: A Native Shift

Last year, we set a goal to increase the speed of every component of the TypeScript toolset by an order of magnitude. To achieve this, we developed a native port of TypeScript written in Go, allowing the compiler to fully leverage the capabilities of modern hardware.

How it was built

The transition was handled with extreme care:

  • Faithful Implementation: We rewrote the codebase in Go while strictly adhering to the original structure and logic.
  • Consistency: This ensures that the results remain compatible and consistent between the original compiler and the new native version.

What's new under the hood?

The shift to Go introduces several critical technical advantages:

  1. Native Execution Speed: Bypassing the overhead of the JS runtime.
  2. Shared Memory Multithreading: Utilizing multiple CPU cores more efficiently.
  3. Advanced Optimizations: Resulting in typical build speedups between 8×8\times8× and 12×12\times12×.

📦 Getting Started

TypeScript 7 is available immediately via npm. To upgrade your workspace, follow these steps:

  • Run the installation command:
    npm install -D typescript

  • Execute the new tsc compiler:
    npx tsc

🖥️ Editor Integration & DX

A compiler is only as good as the experience it provides in the editor. TypeScript 7 enhances this via improved support for the Language Server Protocol (LSP).

Whether you utilize VS Code, Visual Studio, WebStorm, or any other modern IDE, the speed and multithreading improvements will be evident.

  • VS Code: Use the dedicated TypeScript 7 extension available today.
  • Visual Studio: TypeScript 7 is enabled automatically based on your project workspace.

The Daily Workflow Impact

Imagine your typical development cycle:

  1. Project Load: Opening your editor and loading a project now feels sluggish instantaneous.
  2. Navigation: Operations like find-all-references now take a tiny fraction of the previous time.
  3. Real-time Feedback: Auto-completions and "red squiggles" (diagnostics) appear almost immediately as you type.
  4. The Build Loop: Running tsc (especially in --watch mode) creates a significantly tighter feedback loop for you and your AI agents.

📊 Performance Benchmarks

We tested TypeScript 7 against TypeScript 6 using several massive open-source projects. The results demonstrate a staggering increase in efficiency.

Build Time Comparison

The speedup can be calculated as: Speedup=TimeTS6TimeTS7\text{Speedup} = \frac{\text{Time}_{TS6}}{\text{Time}_{TS7}}Speedup=TimeTS7TimeTS6

Memory Consumption

TypeScript 7 is not only faster but also more lean, requiring less aggregate memory.

Real-world Example: In the VS Code codebase, the time from opening the editor to seeing the first error dropped from 17.5 seconds to under 1.3 seconds (a >13×>13\times>13× improvement).

✅ Production Ready & Battle-Tested

Stability is paramount. To ensure TypeScript 7 is ready for the most demanding environments, we employed a rigorous testing strategy:

  • Legacy Test Suite: We ran tens of thousands of existing tests developed over the last decade.
  • Internal Validation: We partnered with Microsoft teams including Loop, Office, PowerBI, Teams, and Xbox.
  • External Partnerships: We collaborated with industry leaders to refine the experience:
    • Google, Vercel, Sentry, Slack, Figma, Canva, Notion, Bloomberg, Linear, Miro, Lattice, Vanta, and VoidZero.

Celebrate Compelling

We have also overhauled our broader test infrastructure to run natively on TypeScript 7, ensuring that the stability you expect from the language is preserved in this high-performance era.
