🎵 Geometry Nodes: Audio Integration

Who says nodes can't have a rhythm? You can now drive your procedural setups using imported audio files.

  • New Tooling: The Sample Sound Frequencies node, paired with the dedicated Sound socket, enables the creation of simulations and animations that react in real-time to audio data.
  • Pro Tip: To ensure you hear the audio during playback, add the files to the Video Sequencer and toggle the Playback Sync setting to "Sync to Audio"\text{"Sync to Audio"}"Sync to Audio".

🛠️ Mesh & Dynamics Evolution

Procedural Beveling

The community's long-standing wish has been granted with the introduction of the Mesh Bevel node. This allows for precise, procedural control over vertices and edges without destructive modeling.

Node-Based Physics

Blender 5.2 introduces a revolutionary approach to simulations. Instead of static menus, physics are now handled via node-based modifiers and groups.

  • Cloth Dynamics: Quickly apply fabric-like properties to any mesh. Built-in controls allow you to manage:
    • Pinning and Tearing.
    • Stretch and Bending stiffness.
  • Hair Dynamics: Operates similarly to cloth, requiring only a surface object for attachment. The process is streamlined via the upgraded Empty hair operator.

The XPBD Engine

The "secret sauce" behind these simulations is the new XPBD Solver node.

XPBD Solver

While most users will use the declarative, use-case-specific assets, power users can dive into the math of the solver to create entirely custom simulation systems from scratch.

Effector System

To interact with the physics, 5.2 introduces three primary effector types:

Effector TypeFunctionImplementation
CollidersTurns closed meshes into obstaclesCollider modifier or procedural bundle
ForcesHandles gravity and custom vectorsBuilt-in gravity or custom force nodes
CustomInjects unique simulation behaviorsClosure and Custom Effector nodes

Tag Filtering: To avoid affecting every single object, a Tag-based filtering system has been added. Assign multiple tags to geometries so effectors only influence specific parts of your scene.

🗣️ Community Spotlight

"Testing a bit more of the new cloth simulation in #geometrynodes on Blender 5.2, really cool, optimized, and above all very customizable!" — Wender Silva (@wendervfx)

"all done :) i learned a lot about the new cloth solver nodes." — Cartesian Caramel (@Cartesian_C)

📦 Data Management & Bundles

Building on the foundation of version 5.0, Bundles are now more versatile. They allow arbitrary data to be carried across object and modifier boundaries.

  • Key Nodes: Get Geometry Bundle and Set Geometry Bundle.

Geometry Bundles

The Introduction of Lists

A new core data type—Lists—allows for sequences of arbitrary length.

  • Creation: Use Field to List and Closure to List.
  • Manipulation: Utilize standard Math nodes, Filter List, and Sort List.

Attribute Enhancements

  • Capture Attribute: Now supports selection.
  • Rename Attribute: Add specific prefixes to attributes.
  • Get Attribute Names: Outputs a filtered list of attribute names based on domain/type.
  • Transfer Attributes: Move an unlimited number of attributes between geometries.
  • Dimensionality: Attributes can now be stored as 4D float vectors: V⃗=(x,y,z,w)\vec{V} = (x, y, z, w)V=(x,y,z,w) (Note: Geometry Nodes currently only process the 3D component).

🔤 String, Curve, and Object Updates

String Manipulation

The string toolkit has been significantly expanded:

  • Find in String: Now supports searching from the end of the string.
  • Trim String: Remove characters from the start or end.
  • Reverse String: Flip the character order.
  • Set String Case: Toggle between UPPER and lower case.
  • Split String: Break text into a list using a delimiter.

Curves & Empties

  • NURBS: New Set NURBS Order and Set NURBS Weight nodes for finer computation control.
  • Empties: Geometry Node modifiers can now be applied directly to Empty objects, making them ideal for simulation effectors or geometry-free procedural effects.

⚙️ Miscellaneous Improvements

Node Tools & Performance

  • Persistence: Node tool inputs are now remembered between operator calls.
  • Optimization: Reduced face corner evaluation in various sampling nodes.
  • Control: A new call stack depth limit is available in the Preferences menu.

Other New Additions

  • Collection Children node: Access all child objects/collections as a list.
  • Three new building blocks for Merge by Distance for granular control.
  • Self Object is now a default input mode for object sockets.
  • Instance Reference node: Access internal attributes for instancing.
  • Get Geometry Component node: Simplify the extraction or editing of single components.
