"The era of GNU GPL licensed software within the FreeBSD base system has officially come to an end."
As of this past week, the source tree for the upcoming FreeBSD 16 has successfully retired the very last remnants of code licensed under the GNU GPL. This marks a significant milestone in the project's architectural purity and licensing goals.
The Final Piece: The dialog Transition
The last holdout in the base system was the dialog implementation. The process of removing it was a phased transition:
- The FreeBSD installer first migrated from
dialogtobsddialog. - The
dpvtool remained the final utility utilizingdialog. dpvwas subsequently disabled and eventuallyretiredremoved.
Software Transition Summary
| Old Component | Replacement/Status | License Change |
|---|---|---|
dialog | bsddialog | GPL BSD |
dpv | Retired | N/A |
| GNU Sub-tree | Removed | GPL None |
Technical Workflow of the Removal
The following diagram illustrates the path taken to purge the GPL code from the system:
Timeline and Integration
The ticket to eliminate dialog was originally initiated in February. It has now been officially merged into the source tree.
The release schedule can be represented as:
Release Checklist:
- Retire
dialogimplementation - Remove GNU sub-tree from base
- Finalize FreeBSD 16.0 stable build
- Official Release (Expected December 2027)
Implementation Detail
For those tracking the changes in the source, the removal essentially looks like this in the version control:
# Conceptual removal of the GNU directory
rm -rf /sys/src/gnu
git commit -m "Retire the GNU sub-tree as no GPL code remains in base"
Related FreeBSD Developments
Beyond the licensing changes, several other updates are currently in motion:
- Hardware Support: Continuous improvements for laptops, specifically regarding GPU audio drivers and WiFi.
- Desktop Experience: Work is ongoing for the desktop installer, particularly regarding licensing and NVIDIA driver integration.
- Kernel/Drivers: The graphics driver port has been updated to align with
Linux 6.12 LTS. - Version 15.1: Recently released, featuring enhanced C23 support and updated WiFi drivers (though it faced delays due to critical x86 bug fixes).
- Innovation: New funding has been secured to implement AI-assisted vulnerability discovery.
