Teardown: The BMW / Harman IDC23H Infotainment Unit (B423)

Written by Tim | January 14, 2026 Categories: Car Hacking, Embedded Systems

🌐 Overview

Kicking off the first blog post of 2026 with another hardware deep dive! Today, we are analyzing the BMW IDC23H, a cutting-edge infotainment head unit manufactured by Harman Becker.

As of early 2026, the IDC23H represents one of BMW's most recent iterations of in-car entertainment. This specific unit was harvested from a new BMW X1 (U11 SUV). Architecturally, it evolves from the previous MGU22/MGU22H generation.

The Harman-Garmin Partnership

Interestingly, this unit isn't a solo effort. Much like the MGU22 series, the IDC23 is a joint venture between Harman Becker and Garmin. The naming convention reveals the manufacturer:

  • IDC23: Produced by Garmin.
  • IDC23H: Produced by Harman Becker.

Essentially, if you see an H suffix in the model name, it denotes a Harman build.

🔌 Connectivity & Integration

The IDC23H boasts a wide array of interfaces. I've noted several connections that are new compared to previous BMW iterations.

Interface Breakdown

Connection TypeTarget Component / Standard
APIXDriver Camera System (DCS), Heads-Up Display (HUD), Driver's Display (DFE), Central Information Display (CID)
Wireless2.4 GHz2.4\text{ GHz}2.4 GHz / 5 GHz5\text{ GHz}5 GHz WiFi (802.11 abgn/ac/ax MIMO 2x2), Bluetooth 5.0 / EDR
SatelliteGNSS Navigation
Ethernet100BASE-T1 and 1GBASE-T1
OtherAR-CAM, 1-3x USB ports

🔍 Key Observations

Two specific connections caught my eye: the DCS and the DFE.

  1. DCS (Driver Camera System): Based on available documentation:

"The system detects the alignment of the driver’s head and their line of sight. This is required for the ‘Fatigue Alert’ function."

  2. DFE (Driver's Display): While it sounds simple, the DFE is actually the vehicle's instrument cluster.

The Big Change: In this generation, BMW has removed the dedicated "KOMBI" instrument cluster module. The head unit now handles both the infotainment and the instrument cluster directly. This is a goldmine for modders looking to implement custom skins or boot animations on the dashboard!

🛠️ Basic System Specifications

Before opening the chassis, here are the core hardware specs:

ComponentDetail
Main ProcessorQualcomm Snapdragon SA8155P
RAM12 GB12\text{ GB}12 GB LPDDR4
Interface ProcessorInfineon “TRAVEO” CYT3BB-series (ARM Cortex M7F)
Storage128 GB128\text{ GB}128 GB UFS v3.1

📦 External Analysis

The unit maintains a familiar rectangular form factor, very similar to the MGU22.

  • Ventilation: Perforations on the left and right sides for airflow.
  • Thermal Management: The bottom is constructed from a thick metal plate that serves as a heatsink for the internal PCB.
  • Labeling: Identification stickers are located on the top and front.

🔌 Rear I/O Mapping

Looking at the back of the unit, the ports are arranged as follows (from left to right):

  1. BT/WLAN: Black connector.
  2. USB Slots: Three slots available; only "USB 2" is populated with a blue connector.
  3. MAIN: Large black connector for the primary vehicle wiring harness.
  4. CID: Red connector for the Central Information Display.
  5. AR-CAM: Brown connector for Augmented Reality navigation.

🔬 Internal Teardown

Once the lid is removed, the interior reveals a layout nearly identical to the MGU22, with one major addition: a dedicated APIX connectivity PCB to manage the DCS, HUD, and DFE ports.

The system consists of two primary boards:

  • Main Device PCB (Processing and Storage)
  • APIX Connectivity PCB (Display and Camera I/O)
