🛠️ The Mission

Postgres is arguably the most popular database in existence, but scaling it in a production environment is notoriously difficult. PgDog is solving this by building advanced scaling tools—specifically load balancing and sharding—to ensure Postgres is the only database a company ever needs.

The Technical Challenge

We are building a distributed database from the ground up using first principles. Our goal is to make Postgres scale with the ease of Cassandra or ElasticSearch.

Key Objectives:

  • Seamless Sharding: Ensure queries "just work" with sharded Postgres so users don't have to rewrite their SQL.
  • Dynamic Redistribution: Implement in-place data redistribution to make sharding a "push-button" operation.
  • Production First: We ship features directly to customers the moment they are ready.

👤 Who You Are

We are looking for a meticulous, detail-oriented engineer who balances calculated risk with rigorous quality.

  • Testing Philosophy: You write tests because you actually want the system to work, not just to satisfy a manager's checklist.
  • Production Mindset: You aren't afraid to deploy code to real data; you believe that's the only true way to validate a solution.
  • Cognitive Independence: You are comfortable using AI, but you never let it do the thinking for you.
  • Curiosity: You are happy to spend your day diving into the Postgres SQL reference and Wikipedia to solve hard problems.

📅 Your Journey at PgDog

The First 30 Days

  • Get fully acquainted with the entire codebase.
  • Start contributing to active development.
  • Engage directly with customers to gather feedback.
  • Help the team identify and acquire new users.

Day-to-Day Life

Your time will be split roughly as follows: Total Time=60% (New Features)+30% (Bug Fixes)+10% (Infra Glue)\text{Total Time} = 60\% \text{ (New Features)} + 30\% \text{ (Bug Fixes)} + 10\% \text{ (Infra Glue)}Total Time=60% (New Features)+30% (Bug Fixes)+10% (Infra Glue)

You'll be leveraging Rust for its type-safety and "fearless concurrency," utilizing a robust open-source ecosystem or building your own libraries to contribute back to the community.

🎙️ From the Founder: Lev Kokotov

Lev Kokotov

"I've been working with Rust for nearly a decade—I even built my own web framework just for the challenge. PgDog started as a side project while I was between jobs; a year later, it's mission-critical infrastructure for some very serious users. We've grown 5×5\times5× in just a few months by pushing Postgres to do things it wasn't originally designed for. The reality is that if you can make a user's existing database just work, they'll love you—nobody actually wants to migrate to Dynamo."

🎁 Perks & Culture

  • Health & Wellness: Fully covered dental and health insurance.
  • Flexibility: Unlimited PTO.
  • SF Local Perks: If you're in the Bay Area, expect plenty of coffee, dinners, hikes, and bike rides.
  • The Mascot: You'll get to help walk my 90-pound dog (which is exactly where the name PgDog comes from!).
