According to data from Epoch AI, the lead time for proprietary models is shrinking to roughly four months. This creates a precarious financial situation given the scale of investment:
- Current Spend: Approximately \2 \times 10^{12}$ (two trillion dollars) in capital expenditures (CapEx).
- Projected Spend: Total CapEx is expected to exceed \5 \times 10^{12}$ (five trillion dollars) by the end of 2030.
The "Success" Checklist
For these investments to be rational, the following conditions must be met:
- Demand for LLM-based AI must exceed almost any previous technological trend.
- Major players must secure extraordinary profits with massive margins.
The second point is the sticking point. High margins are nearly impossible in a highly competitive market, especially one disrupted by new entrants.
