The Indo-European Family Tree
The Lineage of Indo-European Languages
Created by Damon Binder, this interactive project explores the Indo-European Family Tree, tracing the evolution of diverse tongues back to a single source.
About the Project: From the familiarity of English and Hindi to the classical roots of Latin and Persian, all these languages originate from Proto-Indo-European—a prehistoric language that was never written down, spoken approximately 4,500 years before the common era.
🛠️ Tool Functionality
The interface allows users to toggle between different visualization styles:
- Circular Map
- Linear Map
- Node Labeling (via language name or native phonetic spelling)
Users can interact with the map by clicking on highlighted words to trigger audio. Note that these sounds are generated via a neural text-to-speech system rather than recordings of native speakers.
🧬 Linguistic Evolution
The timeline of this descent can be expressed mathematically as:
Below is a simplified representation of the ancestral flow:
📊 Language Overview
| Language | Origin Root | Status |
|---|---|---|
| English | Proto-Indo-European | Modern |
| Hindi | Proto-Indo-European | Modern |
| Latin | Proto-Indo-European | Classical |
| Persian | Proto-Indo-European | Modern |
💻 Technical Implementation
The nodes in the visualization are likely structured similarly to this data object:
{
"language": "English",
"root": "Proto-Indo-European",
"phonetic": "/ˈɪŋɡlɪʃ/",
"audio_type": "neural_tts"
}
For further details, users can access the Reconstruction notes ↗ to understand how these ancient sounds were hypothesized.
