RustDesk now supports true unattended remote access on Wayland
RustDesk Unlocks True Unattended Access for Wayland

RustDesk has officially introduced true unattended remote access for the Wayland display protocol, which includes full support for configurations involving multiple monitors.

The Wayland Challenge
Historically, implementing remote desktop functionality on Wayland has been one of the most significant hurdles for Linux developers. Previously, users often had to manually approve every single connection request.
Now, RustDesk has overcome this barrier. By providing true unattended access, the software no longer requires a human operator at the remote end to grant permission for every session.
"After the initial configuration is complete, you can establish a connection even if the remote machine is unoccupied—this includes accessing the system from the login screen immediately following a reboot."

Current Availability & Technical Specs
At this stage, the feature is being rolled out as a specific preview build. It is currently targeted at x86_64 architectures running Debian or Ubuntu-based distributions.
Quick Access:
- Build Type: Preview
- Architecture:
x86_64 - OS Support: Debian/Ubuntu
- Key Feature:
To install the preview, you might use a command similar to:
wget https://rustdesk.com/download/wayland-preview-amd64.deb
sudo dpkg -i wayland-preview-amd64.deb
Market Comparison
Wayland support remains a pain point for many industry leaders. The following table illustrates the current landscape:
| Software | Wayland Status | Requirement/Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| RustDesk | True Unattended | Preview build for Debian/Ubuntu |
| AnyDesk | Limited | Requires Xorg for incoming sessions |
| TeamViewer | Experimental | Labeled as experimental for common DEs |
The Path Forward
The team is seeking extensive real-world feedback to ensure stability before this becomes the standard.
Development Roadmap:
- Gather telemetry and user feedback from preview builds.
- Stabilize the implementation.
- Expand support to other distributions (e.g., Fedora and Arch Linux).
- Merge functionality into the official, standard RustDesk releases.
If you are currently utilizing Wayland—particularly in a multi-monitor environment—the team encourages you to test the preview build and report any bugs or successes.
