Working with AI Feels More Like Leadership Than Coding

Managing AI: A Shift from Programming to Leadership

By Allen Bargi | August 15, 2026

For the majority of my professional life, writing code provided a sense of absolute certainty. In the realm of traditional software, the logic was binary:

Same Input  ⟹  Same Output\text{Same Input} \implies \text{Same Output}Same Input⟹Same Output

If this equation failed, we simply labeled it a bug.

The Parallel to Leadership

Interacting with AI, however, feels less like syntax and more like management. When I lead a human team, I can delegate a task and receive exactly what was requested. More importantly, I often receive something better because a teammate grasped the intent behind my words. Conversely, the result sometimes reveals that my own instructions were perfect unclear.

AI operates on software, yet the experience is not fully deterministic. It can:

  • Forge an unexpectedly useful connection.
  • Overlook a glaringly obvious point.
  • Surprise me with a novel methodology.

The Collaborative Loop

To maximize AI's utility, one must treat the interaction as a partnership rather than a tool.

Crucial Limitation: It is vital to remember that AI possesses no lived experience, no accountability, and no human judgment.

Strategies for Alignment

To move beyond simple prompting and toward true leadership, I focus on these requirements:

  • Provide deep context.
  • Explicitly define the desired end-state.
  • Establish clear boundaries.
  • Iterate based on the AI's feedback.

By utilizing examples, corrections, and reusable_instructions, I reduce friction. Over time, the system aligns more closely with my cognitive patterns and specific needs.

AI Leadership Concept

Final Thought

We have spent decades mastering the art of telling machines exactly what to do. Now, the skill set has shifted. We must now explain why the work is significant, what constitutes a successful result, and where human judgment must take the lead.

Working with AI is no longer about writing scripts; it is about leading through conversation.
