🇳🇱 The Dutch Community Where People Live on Strips of Land in a Lake

By Rain Noe — Published July 27 in the Architecture category

While many people dream of owning a home by the lake, the residents of Loosdrecht, a town in the Netherlands, have taken this a step further: they live inside the lake. Their homes are perched upon incredibly narrow, man-made islands.

🛠️ The Origin Story: From Swamp to Settlement

This peculiar geography wasn't an accident of nature but a byproduct of industrial activity. Centuries ago, the area was a vast swampland.

"In centuries past, boats were used to dredge what was once swampland, in order to mine peat for fuel."

The process worked as follows:

  1. Boats dredged the peat from the earth.
  2. Narrow ribbons of land were intentionally left behind.
  3. These strips served a practical purpose: they were the designated zones where peat was unloaded and spread out to dry under the sun.

The Evolution Process

By the 20th century, developers recognized the potential of these leftover slivers of earth. Today, hundreds of people reside in these unique dwellings. Mathematically, the land-to-water ratio for a single lot can be expressed as: Lot Width≪Lot Length\text{Lot Width} \ll \text{Lot Length}Lot Width≪Lot Length
