Cursor Unveils Origin: A New Alternative for Code Hosting

Date: August 17, 2026 | Category: Changelog

Cursor has officially expanded its ecosystem with the launch of Origin, a dedicated code hosting service. This marks a significant shift, as Cursor can now host your source code directly.

"We're starting with the essentials, designed for agent scale: repos, pull requests, code browsing, and GitHub sync."

Origin is currently entering an early beta phase. It is available to all users on paid plans, with the exception of enterprise organizations where administrators have chosen to opt out.

🛠️ Origin Repositories

The central hub for these repositories is the newly introduced Codebase tab. To get started, users are provided with a setup page to install the CLI.

Getting Started with the CLI

You can use the command line to manage your projects:

# Example commands for Origin
cursor-cli clone [repo-url]
cursor-cli push [local-project]

Once configured, your organization's name is integrated directly into the web URL: cursor.com/codebase/ acme-corp

🔄 GitHub Integration & Synchronization

You don't have to choose between platforms; your GitHub repositories can coexist with those hosted on Origin.

How Syncing Works

  1. Connect: Link your GitHub account to Cursor.
  2. Select: Choose your specific organization and the repositories you wish to sync.
  3. Control: You maintain full control over which repos are synced and can disconnect them at any time.

Bi-Directional PR Workflow

Pull requests for synced repositories are mirrored in real-time.

  • Cursor →\rightarrow→ GitHub: Comments made in Cursor are posted to GitHub.
  • GitHub →\rightarrow→ Cursor: Reactions or replies on GitHub appear in Cursor within seconds.

🤖 Unified Agent Integration

The primary advantage of Origin is the convergence of tools. Previously, your code lived in one place and your agents in another. Now, the following are unified in a single location:

  • Source Code
  • Pull Requests
  • AI Agents

Mathematically, the value proposition can be viewed as: Developer Velocity=(Code+PRs+Agents)×Unified Environment\text{Developer Velocity} = (\text{Code} + \text{PRs} + \text{Agents}) \times \text{Unified Environment}Developer Velocity=(Code+PRs+Agents)×Unified Environment

🔌 App Ecosystem & Extensions

Cursor is developing a robust app ecosystem to ensure your entire tech stack integrates with Origin.

Current Integrations

  • Vercel: Connect via the "Apps" tab to enable preview deployments for every PR (allowing for direct testing and commenting).
  • Depot: Seamless integration for build caching.
  • Buildkite: Supports both native pipelines and existing GitHub Actions workflows.

Management Dashboard

From the settings, you can:

  • Monitor the sync_status\text{sync\_status}sync_status of GitHub repos.
  • Manage user access permissions.
  • Oversee connected third-party applications.
