Feature Request: Support AGENTS.md
Proposal for AGENTS.md Integration
This document summarizes a specific feature request submitted to the anthropics/claude-code repository on GitHub.
📌 Issue Overview
Issue Number: #6235
Status: Open Closed
Author: @DylanLIiii
Date Submitted: August 21, 2025
The core of the request is to implement support for AGENTS.md, a standardized configuration file designed to help AI coding assistants navigate and comprehend complex codebases more efficiently.
🛠 Technical Context
Several industry tools are already adopting this standard to ensure a unified way for agents to ingest project-specific context. These include:
- Cursor
- Amp
- Codex
- And others
The official specification can be found at https://agents.md/.

🎯 Motivation & Goals
The primary driver for this request is interoperability. When a project uses a standardized AGENTS.md file, it reduces friction when multiple developers use different AI tools on the same codebase.
"It doesn’t work as well when collaborating with other developers who aren’t using Claude Code." — DylanLIiii
Expected Benefits
- Unified codebase understanding across different AI agents.
- Improved collaboration in multi-tool environments.
- Reduced manual prompting for project context.
Conceptual Logic
We can represent the goal of standardization as a simple relationship:
🗺️ Workflow Integration
The following diagram illustrates how AGENTS.md acts as the bridge between the raw code and the AI's understanding:
💻 Implementation Example
If implemented, Claude Code would look for a file in the root directory similar to this:
# Project Agent Instructions
- This project uses a microservices architecture.
- Always check `/docs/api-spec.md` before suggesting endpoint changes.
- Preferred naming convention: camelCase for variables, PascalCase for classes.
The agent would then treat the contents of AGENTS.md as inline code or high-priority system instructions to guide its behavior.
