📢 Announcement: xorg-server 26.0.99.901

From: Alan Coopersmith (alan.coopersmith at oracle.com)
Date: Thursday, August 20, 2026, 02:01:40 UTC

Following the established roadmap, I am happy to introduce xorg-server 26.0.99.901. This release serves as the initial release candidate for the upcoming version 26.1.0 (commonly referred to as xorg-server 26.1.0 rc1).

🛠️ Scope of the Release

This package encompasses all server implementations excluding Xwayland. The included servers are visualized below:

🚀 Significant Updates since v21.1

Several major changes have been integrated since the xorg-server 21.1 era:

  • Build System: autoconf/automake →\rightarrow→ meson (now the sole build system).
  • DPMS: Implementation of the DPMSInfoNotify event (per DPMS 1.2).
  • XFixes: Added support for version 6.1, including the AllowForceTerminate configuration option in xorg.conf.
  • Security & Defaults:
    • Byte-swapped clients are now disallowed by default.
    • Connections to the font server are disabled by default.
  • Platform Specifics:
    • Xorg: Introduced a DRM platform specifically for BSD.
    • Xorg: For users not running as root, log files have been relocated to $XDG_STATE_HOME/xorg.
  • Xvfb Enhancements:
    • Now supports multiple CRTCs.
    • Expanded mouse support to include up to 13 buttons.
  • Quality Assurance: An expanded suite of tests has been included.

🧪 Testing & Bug Reporting

Community feedback and testing for this RC are highly encouraged.

[!IMPORTANT] Recommendation for Xorg Testers: It is strongly advised to build and execute this version against libpciaccess 0.19 (released March 2026). Certain bug fixes rely on a new API from that release; Meson will only trigger these fixes if the API is detected during the build process.

Reporting Pipeline:

  • Identify bug
  • Verify against libpciaccess 0.19
  • Submit issue at: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/xorg/xserver/-/issues

📦 Download and Verification

The current version can be represented mathematically as: Vrelease=26.0.99.901V_{release} = 26.0.99.901Vrelease=26.0.99.901
