Proliferate: An Open-Source AI IDE for Coding Agents

Proliferate is a self-hostable, open-source orchestration layer designed to act as a "Codex" for any coding agent. It allows developers to execute multiple AI agents simultaneously within a single, unified workspace.

Running one agent at a time in a single directory is a thing of the past. Proliferate enables the parallel execution of agents—whether hosted locally or in the cloud—while facilitating the creation of repeatable, automated workflows.

🚀 Core Capabilities

Proliferate transforms how you interact with AI by providing a structured environment for agentic workflows.

  • Native Agent Harnesses: Direct support for industry leaders including Claude Code, Codex, OpenCode, Cursor, and Grok.
  • Worktree-Based Isolation: Every single task is assigned its own isolated git worktree. This means each task has its own:
    • Dedicated branch
    • Unique working directory
    • Private terminal session
    • Independent conversation history and review state
  • Parallelism: Run multiple agents side-by-side. If you have nnn agents and mmm tasks, the total throughput can be represented as: Total Capacity=∑i=1nAgenti×Taskm\text{Total Capacity} = \sum_{i=1}^{n} \text{Agent}_i \times \text{Task}_mTotal Capacity=∑i=1nAgenti×Taskm
  • Hierarchical Subagents: Primary agents can delegate specific, scoped portions of a project to "child" agents, aggregating the results upon completion.
  • Unified Integrations: Configure Model Context Protocol (MCPs), specialized skills, Computer Use, Browser Use, and custom tools once; these are then shared across all active agents.
  • Automated Workflows: Set up event-driven or scheduled runs, such as:
    1. Nightly code review sweeps.
    2. Automated triage for system alerts.
    3. Automatic dependency version bumps.

🛠 Architecture Overview

The following diagram illustrates how Proliferate manages the relationship between the control plane, the agents, and the filesystem.

🤖 Supported Agent Ecosystem

Proliferate utilizes native harnesses to ensure maximum compatibility with the following agents:

AgentIntegration TypeStatus
ClaudeNative Harness✅ Supported
CodexNative Harness✅ Supported
OpenCodeNative Harness✅ Supported
CursorNative Harness✅ Supported
GrokNative Harness✅ Supported

🌐 Self-Hosting & Deployment

The entire Proliferate control plane is designed for self-hosting, including support for air-gapped environments.

Deployment Options

  • Docker Compose: Use self-hosted-deploy.md to launch a stack consisting of Caddy, Postgres, and the API via bootstrap scripts.
  • AWS (One-Click): Use self-hosted-aws.md for a CloudFormation wrapper that deploys the stack onto EC2.
  • Other Clouds: Documentation is available for GCP, Azure, and Kubernetes.

Configuration Note: All required and optional settings are detailed in the server/deploy/.env.production.example file. To connect your desktop application, refer to the configure desktop guide.

💻 Running from Source

Prerequisites

Before starting, ensure you have the following installed:

  • Rust (Stable)
  • Node.js 22+
  • pnpm
  • Python 3.12+ (for full-stack dev)
  • uv (for full-stack dev)
  • Docker (for local database)

Installation & Execution

To run the desktop app with the local AnyHarness runtime:

make install
make dev-local

For full-stack development involving the local control plane:

make server-install
make setup
PROFILE=main make build # Initialize clean worktree
make dev-list
PROFILE=main make run

Note: Use named dev profiles to manage state, ports, and Tauri configurations when running multiple worktrees simultaneously.
