Nebula Sans
Introducing Nebula Sans
Nebula Sans is a contemporary, humanist sans-serif typeface characterized by a neutral aesthetic. It has been meticulously crafted to ensure maximum legibility across both physical print and digital screens.
This typeface serves as the official brand identity for Nebula, the premium streaming platform powered by independent creators.
The Origin Story
Nebula Sans was developed as a seamless, "drop-in" replacement for Whitney SSm. It utilizes Source Sans as its foundation and is released freely to the public under the SIL Open Font License.

Design Lineage
Versatility & Weights
Nebula Sans is available in two styles (Roman and Italic) across six distinct weights. Whether you are designing a UI or a physical billboard, this font fits every need—be it graphical, digital, physical, metaphysical, metaphorical, or allegorical.
| Weight | Sample Text (Roman) | Sample Text (Italic) |
|---|---|---|
| Light | I’d take the awe of understanding over the awe of ignorance any day | I’ve been navigating based on cardinal directions…and vibes |
| Book | The “tv” in nebula.tv stands for “Taylor’s Version” | We believe in facts, science, and human rights |
| Medium | Don’t use seven words when four will do | We’re assembling a crew for a heist |
| Semibold | Introducing: Facts and fiction | Charl is the key to our success |
| Bold | An indie streaming service | There’s no place like home |
| Black | Powered by humans | Enter the Snack Zone |
The Motivation
Why invest in a custom typeface? The team identified three primary drivers:
- Personalization: The ability to tweak the glyphs to match specific brand preferences.
- Features: The integration of advanced typographic capabilities tailored to their specific use cases.
- Sustainability: Avoiding the scaling costs associated with commercial licensing as the company grows.
The Technical Transition
Source Sans was chosen because it shares a similar design philosophy with Whitney SSm; both aim to bridge the gap between European humanist and American gothic styles.
Because Source Sans is naturally narrower and smaller, the team had to adjust the metrics. This can be thought of as a scaling function where the width of Nebula Sans is adjusted to approximate the width of Whitney SSm:
Typographical Nuances
1. Punctuation
The team felt that the punctuation in Whitney SSm was slightly too rigid/straight. Nebula Sans introduces a more organic feel to these marks.
2. Stylistic Alternates
Nebula Sans retains the alternates found in Source Sans but sets the defaults to mirror Whitney SSm. These can be toggled via CSS:
- Single storey 'a':
font-feature-settings: 'ss01'; - Open 'g':
font-feature-settings: 'ss02'; - Tailed 'l':
font-feature-settings: 'ss03';
3. The Asterisk
The word "asterisk" comes from the Greek word for "star." Given the brand name Nebula, the team created a custom star-like glyph for the asterisk.
/* Example of applying Nebula Sans features */
.brand-text {
font-family: 'Nebula Sans', sans-serif;
font-feature-settings: "ss01", "ss02";
}
4. Tabular Figures
Unlike Whitney SSm, Nebula Sans supports tabular lining figures (monospaced numbers). This is critical for video players to prevent "jittering" during timestamp updates.
Example of Tabular alignment:
