"Open Social is an invitation to rebuild the attention economy."

We are thrilled to announce that Graze is joining Flipboard. This move represents our most ambitious attempt yet to fundamentally reshape how we interact online.

The Philosophy of Attention

Throughout my professional journey, I have been obsessed with the digital experience: how code, institutions, and culture mold us—and how we, in turn, mold them. Unfortunately, we have been steered toward a digital existence that primarily benefits a tiny fraction of the population.

As the internet has become a foundational pillar of human life, the mission at Graze has never felt more urgent. Our goal is straightforward: we create tools that democratize the social algorithm.

Historically, the algorithm has been the "crown jewel" of platforms, often used as a weapon to serve the interests of a few. We believe in:

  • Centralized algorithmic control →\rightarrow→ Distributed algorithmic power.
  • A moral imperative to shift ownership.
  • A more competitive and efficient attention economy that serves the many.

Proven Momentum

What started as a simple thought experiment on my blog has evolved into the defining work of my career. The scale of our impact over the last 21 months is significant:

Total Reach=41,000,000,000 posts12,000,000 users\text{Total Reach} = \frac{41,000,000,000 \text{ posts}}{12,000,000 \text{ users}}Total Reach=12,000,000 users41,000,000,000 posts

This data confirms that we have the necessary playbook to reverse the "widening gyre" of the current attention economy.

Why Flipboard?

Scaling a vision requires more than just a great product; it requires operational maturity. As a small team, we often found ourselves bogged down by the "administrative overhead" of running a company—wearing half a dozen hats that distracted us from our core mission.

After spending the last year collaborating with Mike, I realized that Flipboard had already conquered many of the operational hurdles we were struggling with. By merging, we avoid wasting years of precious time and can instead multiply our impact.

The Synergy of Vision

Both Mike and I believe that as generative AI begins to saturate legacy platforms with noise, human curation is the only sustainable path forward.

The Future Architecture

Our combined efforts will manifest in two primary components:

ComponentRoleFunction
SurfThe FrontendA browser for the open social web; a hub for Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads, and RSS.
GrazeThe BackendThe engine allowing curators to build, tune, and monetize feeds without writing code.

Our Commitment

For our current users and their audiences: nothing is disappearing. Our mission remains unchanged, and the product is staying. This transition simply provides us with the resources to ship the engine required to make the "Open Social" promise a reality.

Our Final Goal:

  • Leverage open protocols.
  • Eliminate "algorithmic kings."
  • Ensure creators own their work and get paid.
  • Remove the single-owner gatekeeper of visibility.
