ravynOS: A Pre-alpha Open-Source OS Derived from Darwin & FreeBSD

ravynOS is an ambitious, early-stage (pre-alpha) operating system. It is constructed using a foundation of Darwin, FreeBSD, and various Apple open-source components. The primary objective is to create a system that maintains compatibility with macOS applications while removing all proprietary hardware locks hardware restrictions.

"We have a deep appreciation for macOS, but we disagree with the trend toward a closed-off ecosystem and restrictive hardware."

Our mission is to synthesize the elegance of macOS with the liberty of the open-source movement.

⚠️ Current Project Status

This release is a developer preview. It is specifically designed for those who wish to help build the system from the ground up.

  • Polished User Experience
  • Feature Complete
  • Ready for General End-Users
  • Experimental Core Functionality

The Vision: The "ravynOS Formula"

We can define the goal of this project mathematically: macOSfinesse+OpenSourcefreedom=ravynOS\text{macOS}_{\text{finesse}} + \text{OpenSource}_{\text{freedom}} = \text{ravynOS}macOSfinesse+OpenSourcefreedom=ravynOS

ravynOS Concept

For the Developers

ravynOS is built to feel like home for those coming from the Apple ecosystem. We utilize a standard directory hierarchy:

  • /Applications
  • /System
  • /Library
  • /Users

Developers can port existing Cocoa applications with very few modifications. To maintain a high-velocity workflow, we include familiar terminal utilities. For example, you can use: open to launch files or pbcopy to manage the clipboard.

Example Terminal Workflow:

# Copying a string to the clipboard in ravynOS
echo "Hello ravynOS" | pbcopy

# Opening the current directory in the file manager
open .
