A Note from LWN

Update Regarding LWN Subscription Costs
Posted on September 1, 2026, by corbet
The broader landscape of digital publishing is currently facing a period of significant instability, with pressures mounting from various angles. While LWN appears to be weathering this storm better than most—thanks entirely to the continued patronage of our readership—we cannot ignore that the economic environment has shifted. Specifically, the cost of doing business has risen.
The Bottom Line: Effective September 15, LWN will be implementing an increase in subscription pricing.
Our Philosophy on Funding
Since we transitioned to a subscription-based model in late 2002, it has proven to be one of our most successful strategic moves. This approach provides two critical advantages:
- It insulates us from the volatility and privacy concerns associated with the
surveillance-drivenadvertising industry. - It ensures our goals remain perfectly aligned with the needs of our readers.
However, this independence is entirely contingent upon your support. For those not yet subscribed, please consider joining; our existence depends solely on our subscribers.
Looking Back: The 2022 Adjustment
In the 24 years we have operated this model, we have only raised prices twice. The previous adjustment occurred in early 2022—nearly five years ago. That increase provided the financial stability necessary to expand our operations significantly.
Achievements funded by the 2022 increase include:
- Personnel: The hiring of
Joe BrockmeierandDaroc Alden, who have broadened the scope and depth of our reporting. - Technical Enhancements:
- Implementation of EPUB article formats.
- Support for
markdownin the comments section. - The creation of the kernel source database.
- Full-text capabilities for RSS and email feeds.
- The introduction of dark-mode.
- The launch of the public topic list.
- Infrastructure: Ongoing efforts to maintain site responsiveness and stability while defending against aggressive scraper attacks.
The Economics of the Current Increase
According to US government data, the cumulative consumer-price inflation since our last price hike is approximately:
While some overhead costs—most notably health insurance—have climbed even higher than this, we have decided to peg our increase to the general inflation figure.
New Pricing Structure
The following monthly rates will take effect on September 15:
| Subscription Level | New Monthly Price |
|---|---|
| Starving hacker | $6.00 |
| Professional hacker | $11.00 |
| Project leader | $19.00 |
| Maniacal supporter | $55.00 |
Note: Group subscriptions will see a proportional increase of approximately 20%.
Transition Plan & Grace Periods
We want to ensure this transition is fair for all current users:
- Pre-paid Subscriptions: Any subscription purchased before the deadline remains valid until its original expiration date.
- Monthly Subscribers: Those with active monthly accounts prior to this announcement will continue to be billed at the old rate for the next six months.
Administrative Checklist:
- Send reminders to monthly subscribers.
- Update billing systems for Sept 15.
- Apply proportional increases to group plans.
Final Thoughts
Raising prices is a task we dislike, which is why we avoid it. Ideally, we would keep prices static and grow our user base, but subscriber growth has plateaued recently. While we are developing long-term strategies to attract new readers, we require this short-term adjustment to maintain our quality.
We are profoundly grateful to this loyal community. Very few writers have the privilege of serving such a dedicated audience.

I appreciate the resource you've built. However, I'll "soapbox" for a moment: I believe the title should have explicitly mentioned the price increase. Vague titles are a corporate trope used to hide bad news (obfuscation). Even if the intent was to be personal or apologetic, a summary title respects the reader's time more. I would have read it regardless, but it's an aesthetic preference.

Coming from a background at Google, that vague title actually made me panic that LWN was shutting down entirely.

I had the same initial reaction. I'm just glad you're still operating and providing such great info.

The blurb on the home page made the intent pretty clear before clicking.

The title worried me too—not because of corporate obfuscation, but because I feared the site was closing or that the author's cancer had returned. I'll be renewing my lapsed subscription after the 15th to celebrate the fact that neither happened.

Keep doing what you're doing. Great work.

LWN is one of the few things I'm happy to pay more for because the content is independent, original, and honest. Don't stress about moderate price adjustments every few years.

I'm more than happy to pay. Unlike most services, LWN hasn't engaged in "shrinkflation"; instead, they've actually expanded the variety and depth of their content since the last hike.
