🛑 The Philosophy of the Freeze

I originally intended to cease Android updates by the end of 2026 to support the [KeepAndroidOpen] movement. However, upon discovering that Android 17 would hit the Xiaomi 15 Ultra on August 27, I decided to lock my system at Android 16.

Android 17 is a mistake. HyperOS 3 is already subpar; version 17 only adds "AI slop," increased telemetry, more corporate rights, fewer user rights, and services that cannot be toggled off.

Goal: Maximize device utility without root access by freezing the OS at the final Android 16 build.

🛠️ Phase 1: The Clean Slate

⚠️ Disclaimer

Backup all data immediately. I accept zero responsibility if you brick your hardware or lose your files.

The Wipe: Settings →\rightarrow→ My device →\rightarrow→ Factory reset →\rightarrow→ Erase all data

⚙️ Initial Setup (The "Privacy First" Kickstart)

This is the most exhaustive setup guide on the old web. Configure the following during the first boot:

Basic Privacy Checklist

  • Location: OFF
  • Emergency location: OFF
  • Automatic system updates: OFF
  • Send usage and diagnostic data: OFF
  • User experience program: OFF
  • Child mode: OFF
  • Interconnection: OFF

Extension Services (Disable All)

UI Preferences:

  • Screen Lock: Skip (configure a pattern swipe later).
  • Navigation: Buttons (keep it old-school).
  • Pro Tip: Install [Nova Launcher] for superior gestures and a cleaner interface than the native Android 16 build.

🔄 Phase 2: Firmware Optimization

Update to the most recent HyperOS version based on Android 16 (as of August 2026). This is critical for camera stability and resolution memory.

Update Path: Settings →\rightarrow→ My device →\rightarrow→ Tap HyperOS Logo →\rightarrow→ Install automatically →\rightarrow→ NO

Disable Auto-Updates: Settings →\rightarrow→ My device →\rightarrow→ Tap HyperOS Logo →\rightarrow→ ... →\rightarrow→ Automatic updates →\rightarrow→ OFF

Note: Ensure you update the Battery firmware and Bluetooth module. The current HyperOS Bluetooth stack is unstable when pairing with legacy Android 11 devices. Warning: Custom permissions are usually wiped after every update.

🗑️ Phase 3: Purging Chinese Bloatware

If an option is missing, use the settings search bar. Leave the "Security" app (green lightning shield) alone.

The "Nuclear" App Restriction Method

Using the Embedded Browser (blue globe) as an example (since I prefer privacy-centric Firefox forks over Chrome-based bloat):

# Logic for disabling bloatware:
1. App Info -> Force Stop
2. App Info -> Storage -> Clear Data & Cache
3. App Info -> Network Access -> Disable (Mobile/WLAN/Background)
4. App Info -> Power -> Battery Saver -> Restrict Background Apps
5. App Info -> Permissions -> Autostart -> OFF
6. App Info -> Permissions -> All Permissions -> OFF
7. App Info -> Notifications -> OFF

Comprehensive Permission Kill-List

Ensure the following are disabled for all bloatware:

  • Sensors: Location, Camera, Microphone.
  • Media: Photos/Videos, Music/Audio.
  • Communication: Messages, Contacts, SMS (Read/Send/Receive).
  • System: Nearby devices, Clipboard access, Device motion, Installed app list.
  • UI: Media volume, Home screen shortcuts, Lock screen visibility, Pop-up windows, Dynamic wallpapers, Chain start.

📷 Phase 4: Camera & GetApps

To update the Camera module, you must temporarily use GetApps.

  1. Launch GetApps →\rightarrow→ Untick Update over WLAN.
  2. Reject all "essential apps" prompts aggressively.
  3. Once the Camera is updated, treat GetApps like the browser: strip every single permission, especially the ability to see your installed apps list.

🛡️ Phase 5: Telemetry & Ads

To kill the tracking: Privacy security →\rightarrow→ Security →\rightarrow→ Additional settings →\rightarrow→ Ad services →\rightarrow→ OFF
