Searching for the best silicone USB cable
The Quest for the Ultimate Silicone USB-C Cable
Originally posted on frankchiarulli.com by fcjr on July 13, 2026
A while back, I acquired an openterface device. It arrived with a cable that felt incredible—almost like silicone (though I'll explain why I use the term "silicone-like" later).
While the cable was wonderfully flexible and a joy to handle, it had a fatal flaw: extreme interference. The signal noise was so severe that the TechxArtisan team actually bundled a secondary nylon cable with the device to ensure it actually worked.
"I loved the tactile experience, but in practice, I experienced actual connection dropouts when attempting to stream video."
Usually, I have a zero-tolerance policy for low-quality or power-only cables; they go straight into the trash. However, this cable was so satisfyingly anti-tangle that I kept it permanently attached to my laptop's power brick.
The Catalyst: The Pinecil Incident
As many of you know, I always carry a Pinecil USB-C soldering iron. I had been using the openterface cable for it, assuming it could handle the occasional accidental brush with the hot tip. I was wrong. Recently, I scraped the cable, and it immediately began to burn and melt.
This disaster sparked a journey to purchase an excessive number of silicone cables. My logic is simple: genuine, high-grade silicone should be heat-resistant enough to survive a nick from a soldering iron without instant combustion.
The Candidates
1. Chillkit
I first spotted this one being used by my friend Robert at the Recurse Center. It looked just as aesthetic and satisfying as the openterface version. However, it's currently unavailable, and the listing only claimed USB 2.0 speeds. I decided to keep searching.
2. Grtoed
(Amazon's naming conventions are a nightmare).
- Pros: Genuine silicone, passes the "Pinecil Test," and supports
USB 3 SuperSpeed+. - Cons: It feels like plastic. It provides zero tactile joy.
3. Thzzhnno
Initially, this felt slightly better than the Grtoed, though still somewhat rigid and plasticky. It featured nicer connectors and better EMI shielding, enumerating as USB 3 SuperSpeed+.
- The Failure: Like the openterface cable, it is not heat resistant. When touched by the soldering iron, it melted instantly (though it didn't burn).
4. LISEN
Available in 9 different colors, this was the most affordable long-range option at $11.99 for 10ft.
- Pros: Super soft, luxury feel, passes the Pinecil test.
- Cons: It's quite thick (both the cable and the ends) and only supports
USB 2.0data.
5. toocki
The budget champion: $13.99 for a two-pack.
- Pros: Thin, great feel, heat resistant, and highly packable.
- Cons: Only
USB 2.0.
Technical Comparison
| Brand | Speed | Heat Resistant? | Tactile Feel | Price/Value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| openterface | Low (EMI issues) | ❌ | Amazing | Included |
| Grtoed | USB 3+ | ✅ | Plastic/Joyless | Moderate |
| Thzzhnno | USB 3+ | ❌ | Rigid | Moderate |
| LISEN | USB 2.0 | ✅ | Luxury/Soft | $11.99 (10ft) |
| toocki | USB 2.0 | ✅ | Thin/Nice | $6.50 per cable |

Final Verdict
I am still searching for the "Holy Grail" of cables. My ideal specifications are:
- Genuinely heat-resistant silicone
- Premium tactile feel
- Length between 6–10ft
-
USB 3.1or higher specifications
