NetBSD 9.5 Launch and the Sunset of the NetBSD-9 Series

Posted by: Martin Husemann
Date: September 06, 2026

The NetBSD Project has officially announced the arrival of NetBSD 9.5. This version serves as the fifth—and concluding—iteration of the stable branch for NetBSD 9.

"The NetBSD Project is pleased to announce NetBSD 9.5, the fifth (and final) release from the NetBSD 9 stable branch."

Technical Overview

This release is not a feature update but rather a curated collection of essential patches. Specifically, it incorporates a subset of fixes focused on:

  • Security enhancements
  • Stability improvements

These updates have been aggregated since the previous milestone, NetBSD 9.4, which debuted in April 2024. In mathematical terms, the version progression can be viewed as: NetBSD 9.4→NetBSD 9.5 (Final)\text{NetBSD } 9.4 \rightarrow \text{NetBSD } 9.5 \text{ (Final)}NetBSD 9.4→NetBSD 9.5 (Final)

End-of-Life (EOL) Notice

With the launch of 9.5, the project is officially marking the support period end-of-life for the netbsd-9 branch and all associated NetBSD-9.x releases.
