Tailwind Labs is Joining Shopify

September 9, 2026 | By Adam Wathan (@adamwathan)

The Big Announcement

Today marks a significant milestone: Tailwind Labs is officially joining Shopify.

Nearly a decade ago, I began developing Tailwind with a simple, personal objective: to streamline the process of crafting aesthetically pleasing user interfaces for my own side projects. Since then, the project has exploded in scale.

Impact by the Numbers

The reach of the framework is now staggering. To put it in mathematical terms: Weekly Installations≈1.1×108\text{Weekly Installations} \approx 1.1 \times 10^8Weekly Installations≈1.1×108

Many of the most influential platforms on the web now rely on Tailwind to style their products, including:

  • ChatGPT
  • X (formerly Twitter)
  • Cloudflare
  • Reddit
  • Shopify

Why Shopify?

While we successfully built a profitable business selling website templates, my internal drive has always been to evolve the framework through the lens of a real-world, complex product.

"I've always wanted the framework to be developed in service of a real product... where we'd face the same challenges as our users, and could invent solutions that make the framework better for everyone."

Shopify provides a massive, diverse environment to test and refine these tools. The ecosystem is vast:

Shopify was an early believer in the utility of Tailwind CSS, adopting it at scale not just for their internal tools, but as a bet for their entire customer base. Because Tailwind is now a "load-bearing" component of their technical stack, they are deeply committed to its evolution.

Beyond the Code

On a personal level, this move aligns with my values. Entrepreneurship fundamentally altered my life, yet I believe society doesn't do enough to support new founders. I am deeply inspired by Shopify's core mission: empowering individuals to start, manage, and scale their own businesses.

What Happens Now?

For the vast majority of users, nothing changes. The open-source nature of our tools is non-negotiable.

The Roadmap

  • Maintain MIT licensing for all open-source projects.
  • Continue community-led development and maintenance.
  • Integrate framework development with Shopify's product needs.
  • Expand the commercial template/subscription business →\rightarrow→ Focus exclusively on Tailwind CSS at Shopify.

Commercial Updates

We are shifting our focus away from growing the commercial side of Tailwind Labs.

  • Existing Customers: You will retain full access to Tailwind Plus and ui.sh.
  • New Customers: Sign-ups for these commercial products are now closed.

A Note on the License

The commitment to open source remains absolute. The code will continue to be distributed under the MIT license:

Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a copy
of this software and associated documentation files...

Closing Thoughts: I am incredibly grateful to everyone who has used Tailwind and supported us over the last nine years. I never envisioned the project reaching this height, and I am convinced that Shopify is the ideal place for us to continue this journey.
