Unveiling Transit Rewards: Bridging the Gap in Urban Mobility

September 22, 2026 | Company News

Waymo is thrilled to introduce its new transit rewards program. While the initiative is launching first in the San Francisco Bay Area, we intend to scale this model to additional cities in the future.

This pioneering program provides riders with Waymo Cash when they integrate their autonomous rides with public transportation systems using a Visa card.

🚀 Deployment Roadmap

  • Internal employee testing
  • Gradual public rollout (commencing in the coming weeks)

The Vision: A Unified Ecosystem

We believe that shared autonomous vehicles and public transit networks are not competitors, but rather replacements complementary components of a modern mobility ecosystem. As transit authorities transition toward tap-to-pay systems, the friction of multimodal travel is disappearing.

"Governor Newsom has challenged all of us to build a transportation system that meets Californians where they are, and that means making the trip to the station as effortless as the train ride itself," stated Toks Omishakin, California Transportation Secretary. "CalSTA welcomes innovations that reward people for choosing transit and make a multimodal trip feel like one seamless journey."

Why Now?

Our data indicates a strong overlap between our users and public transit. In our most established markets—San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Phoenix—over 50% of Waymo riders also utilize public transportation. By investing in this connectivity, we aim to make the daily commute more affordable and efficient.

How Transit Rewards Work

The program integrates with the regional transfer discounts and the tap-to-pay infrastructure established in the SF Bay Area last December. It is compatible with all 27 transit agencies in the region that support contactless Visa payments.

The Reward Logic

To participate, users simply link their Visa card within the Waymo application. The reward is triggered based on the following logic:

Reward={$2.85 Waymo Cashif (Waymo Trip + Transit Trip) occur within 2 hours$0otherwise\text{Reward} = \begin{cases} \$2.85 \text{ Waymo Cash} & \text{if (Waymo Trip + Transit Trip) occur within 2 hours} \\ \$0 & \text{otherwise} \end{cases}Reward={$2.85 Waymo Cash$0if (Waymo Trip + Transit Trip) occur within 2 hoursotherwise

Note: The $2.85 amount specifically mirrors the cost of a standard San Francisco bus fare.

Strategic Partnerships & Infrastructure

The Caltrain Collaboration

In tandem with the rewards launch, Waymo is partnering with Caltrain. To optimize the "first-mile/last-mile" experience, Waymo will lease 40 dedicated parking spots at Caltrain stations to maintain staged vehicles for arriving passengers. We view this as a blueprint for future partnerships with other transit agencies.

A History of Integration

This launch is the culmination of several iterative pilots:

  1. Transit Credit Pilots: Conducted in San Francisco and Los Angeles.
  2. LA Metro: Integration into the Mobility Wallet program.
  3. Microtransit: A strategic partnership with Via in Chandler, AZ.

"Shared mobility is a team effort, and our autonomous ride-hailing service helps expand clean transportation options for everyone," noted Adam Lenz, Head of Sustainability Environment at Waymo.

Regional Impact

Mayor Matt Mahan of San José emphasized the importance of this synergy:

"San José has always believed innovation should make everyday life work better. This partnership does exactly that by using new technology to strengthen public transit, not replace it..."
