After more than a year of intensive development, we are proud to unveil F-Droid 2.0. This represents a total overhaul of the official client and stands as the most significant update to the platform in a decade.
For over ten years, F-Droid has served as the premier gateway for users to find and install Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) on Android. Version 2.0 evolves this mission by introducing a contemporary interface, superior discovery tools, and a streamlined user journey designed for both veterans and newcomers.
🛠️ The Technical Foundation
The user experience has been meticulously rebuilt to align with modern Android standards, specifically Material Design, while ensuring that the core interactions users love remain intact.
To ensure the app can evolve rapidly in the future, key components were rewritten using Kotlin Compose. This modern toolkit allows for a more agile development cycle.

Following 14 rigorous test releases, we are now beginning the phased rollout of F-Droid 2.0.
🗺️ Navigating the New Experience
Our primary objective was to simplify how users discover, install, and manage their software. We have cluttered the menus streamlined the primary navigation into three distinct pillars:
- Discover: The hub for exploration.
- Search: A powerful tool for finding specific software.
- My Apps: A centralized dashboard for managing installations, updates, and troubleshooting.
Note: Settings and "Nearby Swap" remain easily accessible via the top bar, ensuring they are available without crowding the main navigation.
🔍 Enhancing FOSS Discoverability
With the repository now hosting thousands of applications, finding the "perfect" app had become a challenge. F-Droid 2.0 solves this by improving every stage of the journey—from browsing to searching—all without tracking users or using "engagement" algorithms to steal your time.
The Redesigned Discover Screen
The new Discover experience is designed to highlight software you might have otherwise overlooked. It now features:
- Newly Added Apps: The freshest additions to the repo.
- Recent Updates: Software that has just been improved.
- Most Downloaded: The community's top choices.
A Sophisticated Category System
We have moved away from a few broad buckets toward a highly specialized system.
| Feature | Old System | F-Droid 2.0 System |
|---|---|---|
| Scope | Broad, general categories | Highly specialized (VPNs, Firewalls, etc.) |
| Organization | Flat list | "Meta" categories for easier grouping |
| Integration | Basic labels | Deeply integrated descriptions for discovery |
| Gaming | One "Games" category | 17 distinct game genres |
Intelligent Search
Search is no longer limited to app titles. It now scans:
- App descriptions
- Category tags
- Translated content
- Recent query history (for quick access)
Furthermore, we have implemented significant improvements for CJK (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) writing systems, ensuring a reliable experience for global users.
⚡ Advanced Filtering & Onboarding
F-Droid 2.0 introduces a powerful filtering engine. Users can now combine multiple criteria to pinpoint specific software.
Example Logic:
To ensure these tools aren't hidden in complex menus, we've added contextual onboarding screens that guide users through these advanced features in real-time.
📦 A Seamless Installation Process
Historically, Android imposed limitations that made installing or updating apps via third-party stores a second-rate experience. However, thanks to global anti-trust efforts and the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA), the landscape has changed.
F-Droid 2.0 leverages these new system capabilities to implement a unified installer. This ensures a smoother, more automatic update and installation flow regardless of the specific build being used.
