Invitation: Architect the Future of Git on Cloudflare

Date: October 1, 2026
Authors: Dina Kozlov, Dillon Mulroy, and Zebulon Piasecki
Read Time: ~6 minutes

GitHub was engineered for a specific era: one where human beings wrote the code, structured it into repositories, and collaborated via a cycle of commits, branches, pull requests, and issue tracking.

However, the landscape of software engineering is shifting. The next generation of applications will be crafted by a different kind of entity: AI Agents.

The Shift Toward Agentic Development

Agents are no longer just assistants; they are active contributors. They are currently:

  • Squashing bugs and implementing new features.
  • Authoring comprehensive test suites.
  • Performing peer reviews on code changes.
  • Managing dependency updates and general maintenance.

Humans are the only ones writing code. In a future where thousands of agents might be modifying a single codebase simultaneously, the underlying infrastructure must evolve.

The Critical Question: If the current Git model is human-centric, what does a platform designed specifically for autonomous agents look like? How do we track not just the what, but the why behind every automated change?

Introducing Cloudflare Artifacts

To answer this, we previously introduced Artifacts—a versioned filesystem that is fully compatible with Git and capable of scaling to millions of individual repositories.

We didn't want to build another monolithic platform; instead, we built a set of programmable primitives. Artifacts serves as the bedrock, providing:

  1. Programmatic Control: Create and fork repositories via code.
  2. Contextual Storage: Versioned space for both source code and agent-specific context.
  3. Standardized Interface: Git operations that agents are already trained to use.

By providing the foundation, Cloudflare allows you to build the orchestration layer: the logic for how agents coordinate, how merges are validated, and the overall developer experience (DX) for massive-scale agent collaboration.

Current Use Cases

Since entering open beta, we've seen Artifacts power:

  • Vibe-coding platforms: Storing user-generated projects.
  • Session Persistence: Saving the state and code from agent interactions.
  • Isolated Sandboxes: Creating separate repos for multiple agents to work in parallel before merging the best result.

New Power-Ups for Artifacts

We have expanded the capabilities of Artifacts to make it a more potent tool for developers.

1. Seamless Worker Deployment

You can now link an Artifacts repository to a Worker using Workers Builds.

ActionResult
Push to production branchCloudflare builds and deploys the updated Worker.
Push to any other branchA Worker Preview is generated for isolated testing.

2. Direct Worker Management

Using an Artifacts binding, Workers can now manipulate repositories directly. A Worker can fork a project for a specific task, read context, and issue scoped Git tokens.

Example: Forking a project and reading instructions

using project = await env.get("my-project");
const { defaultBranch } = await project.readFile({
    ref: defaultBranch,
    path: "AGENTS.md"
});

const agentTask = {
    remote: workspace.remote,
    token: workspace.token,
    instructions: instructions ? text() : null
};

3. Event-Driven Automation

Artifacts now emits events for actions like pushed, forked, cloned, or deleted. You can subscribe to these to trigger CI/CD or AI review workflows.

Example: Triggering a review agent on push

export default {
    async queue(batch, env) {
        for (const message of batch.messages) {
            const event = message.body;
            if (event.type !== "cf.artifacts.repo.pushed") continue;

            await env.create({
                params: {
                    namespace: event.source.namespace,
                    repo: event.source.repoName,
                    ref: event.payload.ref,
                    commit: event.payload.after,
                },
            });
        }
    },
};

4. Data Jurisdiction & Metrics

  • Jurisdiction: You can now specify where data is stored (e.g., US or EU) at the namespace level.
  • Metrics: The Cloudflare dashboard now tracks total operations, pull/push counts, and error rates.

API call for EU Jurisdiction:

curl "https://api.cloudflare.com/client/v4/accounts/$ACCOUNT_ID/artifacts/namespaces" \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $CLOUDFLARE_API_TOKEN" \
  --json '{"namespace":"my-eu-namespace","jurisdiction":"eu"}'

The Technical Architecture

The relationship between the agent, the storage, and the deployment can be visualized as follows:

Pricing and Logistics

The cost of using Artifacts is a function of the operations performed and the volume of data stored. Mathematically, this can be represented as:

Total Cost=∑(Ops×Rateop)+(Storage×Rategb)\text{Total Cost} = \sum (\text{Ops} \times \text{Rate}_{\text{op}}) + (\text{Storage} \times \text{Rate}_{\text{gb}})Total Cost=∑(Ops×Rateop)+(Storage×Rategb)

Important Date: Billing for Artifacts usage will commence on October 15, 2026.

The Challenge: Build the Next Git Platform

We are officially launching a competition to find the most innovative Git platform built on Cloudflare Workers and Artifacts.

Your Mission Checklist:

  • Design a coordination layer for multi-agent collaboration.
  • Implement a novel review or merging mechanism.
  • Create a unique DX for agent-driven development.
  • Leverage Artifacts bindings and event subscriptions.

We want you to redefine how code is managed in the age of AI. Are you ready to build?
