Testing 12 different Zigbee temperature/humidity sensors
Comprehensive Analysis: Testing 12 Popular Zigbee Temperature & Humidity Sensors
Finding the perfect Zigbee sensor for climate monitoring is difficult if you only read individual reviews. To solve this, I shifted my approach: instead of isolated tests, I conducted a head-to-head comparison of 12 of the most popular budget sensors.
Following my previous deep dives into expensive cheap AliExpress door sensors and smart buttons, I turned my attention to temperature and humidity monitors.

🎯 Project Scope
I selected 12 best-selling units primarily from AliExpress, focusing on brands that users actually integrate into their smart homes: Aqara, Sonoff, Tuya, Thirdreality, Zemismart, and Moes.
The Common Ground:
- ❌ No onboard displays.
- 📡 All utilize the Zigbee protocol.
- 🔋 All are battery-operated.
The Variables: The real differences lie in build quality, form factor, battery longevity, measurement range, and—most importantly—accuracy when compared to a calibrated reference.
🧪 Testing Methodology
To ensure a fair fight, I placed all twelve devices in my office, clustered around a high-precision reference sensor.
The Benchmark Device
My "gold standard" for this test was a Xiaomi Miaomiaoce MHO-C401. To maximize its potential, I used:
- The latest
pvvxcustom firmware. - A Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection to Home Assistant.
The "Butcher Shop" Calibration
To ensure the benchmark was actually accurate, I performed a calibration at a friend's commercial butcher shop. Because state law requires commercial meat refrigerators to be certified every three months, I had access to a lab-certified thermometer.
"While it sounds strange to calibrate home sensors in a meat fridge, it provided a legally verified baseline that most home users can't access."
Using the certified thermometer, I applied the following offsets to my MHO-C401:
Note on Linear Accuracy: Since this calibration occurred at approximately , it is important to remember that sensors don't always scale linearly. While this doesn't guarantee perfect room-temperature accuracy, it provides a consistent, repeatable anchor for comparing the 12 Zigbee units.
Technical Infrastructure
The network was built from scratch to avoid interference:
- Coordinator:
SMLight SLZB-06MG24 PoE - Software:
Zigbee2MQTTversion2.12.1-dev - Distance: Each sensor was positioned meters from the coordinator.

📋 Models, Brands, and Specifications
Almost every sensor in this test costs under 19.99 and is sold outside of AliExpress.
To keep the data clean, I assigned each device a Code Name, as the official model numbers are often incomprehensible.
The Sensor Lineup
| Code Name | Brand | Zigbee Model | Price (Approx) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tony | Aqara | WSDCGQ11LM | $14.89 | AliExpress/Amazon |
| Carmela | SONOFF | SNZB-02B | $9.23 | AliExpress/Amazon |
| Paulie | SONOFF | SNZB-02P | $13.08 | AliExpress/Amazon |
| Richie | ThirdReality | 3RTHS0224Z | $19.99 | Amazon |
| Silvio | Zemismart | TS0201_TZ3000_nau60otv | $14.48 | AliExpress |
| Chris | Moes | TS0201_TZE3000_f2bw0b6k | $6.65 | AliExpress |
| Junior | Tuya | TS0201_TZ3000_yupc0pb7 | $11.35 | AliExpress |
| Melfi | Tuya | TH01 Zbeacon | $4.60 | AliExpress |
| Meadow | Tuya | TS0201_TZ3000_dowj6gyi | $8.42 | AliExpress |

Testing Checklist
- Calibrate reference sensor via certified thermometer.
- Establish dedicated Zigbee network.
- Pair all 12 devices to Zigbee2MQTT.
- Monitor baseline room temperature/humidity.
- Perform low-temperature fridge benchmarks (Added 14.08.2026).
🛠️ Technical Evaluation Criteria
The remainder of the analysis focuses on several key performance indicators:
- Integration: How seamlessly do they pair with
Zigbee2MQTT? - Entities: Which sensors expose the most useful data points?
- Precision: How close are the readings to the reference?
- Customization: Can the reporting intervals be modified?
- Durability: Build quality and resistance to environmental factors.
