🎨 PhotoCraft: A Rust-Powered Photoshop Alternative

storytold 100% Rust macOS · Windows · Linux · FreeBSD · Web License: MIT OR Apache-2.0 Status: early alpha Join the ArtCraft community on Discord

PhotoCraft is an ambitious, open-source project dedicated to the clean-room reimplementation of Adobe Photoshop. Built entirely from the ground up using the Rust programming language, it aims to provide a professional-grade image editing experience without the proprietary baggage.

The ArtCraft Vision ArtCraft is more than just software; it is a collective for creators across all mediums—whether you specialize in digital art, generative AI, music, or game development, you have a place here.

🛠️ Technical Architecture

PhotoCraft isn't just a clone; it's a high-performance engine designed for the modern era.

Performance Stack

  • GPU Acceleration: Utilizes wgpu to ensure compatibility across Metal, Vulkan, DX12, and WebGPU.
  • Memory Management: Implements copy-on-write tiles for efficient data handling.
  • Concurrency: Leverages Rust's safety to run multithreaded filters.

The Command Pipeline

Every interaction in PhotoCraft is abstracted as a command. This allows the core engine to be driven by multiple interfaces:

🌟 Core Feature Set

🗂️ PSD Fidelity & Compatibility

PhotoCraft handles real .psd files with incredible accuracy.

  • Round-tripping: You can open, modify, and save layered documents.
  • Accuracy: In testing, the render matches Photoshop for 307309\frac{307}{309}309307 of the psd-tools test suite.

🎛️ User Experience

The app is designed to feel familiar. If you know Photoshop, you know PhotoCraft.

  • Shortcuts: Standard keys like ⌘J (Duplicate) and ⇧⌘D (Fill) are mapped exactly where you expect.
  • Interface: Panels, menus, and tools follow the industry-standard layout.

🎨 Non-Destructive Editing

Permanent pixel destruction →\rightarrow→ Adjustment Layers. You can stack and reorder edits without altering the original source pixels.

Available Adjustment Layers (16 total):

  • Curves (with per-channel control)
  • Levels (featuring a live histogram)
  • Vibrance & Hue/Saturation
  • Black & White / Channel Mixer
  • Gradient Map & Photo Filter
  • Selective Color & Color Lookup (.cube, .3dl, .look)
  • Shadows/Highlights & HDR Toning
  • Replace Color, Match Color, Desaturate, and Equalize

✨ Layer Styles & Vectors

Bring professional polish to your work with live-updating styles:

  • Styles: Drop Shadow, Inner/Outer Glow, Bevel & Emboss, Satin, and Stroke.
  • Overlays: Color, Gradient, and Pattern (supports .pat imports).
  • Vector Engine:
    • Tools: Pen tool, Rectangle, Ellipse, Triangle, Polygon, and Line.
    • Operations: Unite, Subtract, Intersect, and Exclude.
    • Precision: 116116\frac{116}{116}116116 shape layers in the project's PSD corpus match Photoshop's output exactly.

🔍 Intelligent Selections

PhotoCraft provides a suite of tools for isolating areas of your image:

  1. Manual: Marquees, Lassos, and the Magic Wand.
  2. Automated: Quick Selection, Object Selection, and "Select Subject."
  3. Refinement: "Select and Mask" for intricate edges (like hair).

Note: All smart selection processing happens locally on your machine—no cloud accounts required.

✍️ Typography & Filters

  • Type: Full support for point and paragraph text, editable directly on the canvas with comprehensive controls for leading, tracking, and alignment.
  • Filters: Live on-canvas previews within your selection.
    • Blurs: Gaussian, Box, Motion, Radial, Surface, Smart, Lens, and Shape.
    • Blur Gallery: Tilt-Shift, Iris, Field, Spin, and Path.

🤖 Agent-Ready Integration

Because the engine is command-driven, it is perfectly suited for automation. You can send a JSON payload to trigger a complex edit:

{
  "command": "apply_filter",
  "params": {
    "filter": "gaussian_blur",
    "radius": 5.0,
    "layer_id": "layer_01"
  }
}
