The Knuth Bounty: A Personal Account

Date: 2026-04-12

Two decades have passed since I received what I consider to be one of the most exceptional letters of my life. I had successfully identified a mistake in one of Donald Knuth's publications, and in return, he sent me the legendary reward check.

The Legend of the Error Bounty

In the realm of computer science, it is common knowledge—practically folklore—that Donald Knuth provides a financial reward for any error discovered in his works, including simple typographical slips.

"His books have been scrutinized by thousands of readers over the years, making any undiscovered error a rare find."

My Journey to Discovery

I didn't rush to report my finding. Instead, I followed a strict verification process to ensure I wouldn't embarrass myself:

  • Initial discovery of the anomaly.
  • Multiple re-checks over several months.
  • Consultation with a university "genius" (who, unfortunately, was unimpressed and dismissed my excitement).

The Target Text

The error was located in Computer Modern Typefaces. While not as widely read as The TeXbook or The Art of Computer Programming, it is still a staple. Most people who have studied this specific volume have likely encountered the error I found.

The Reward Mechanism

Because Knuth is wary of how actual check numbers might be misused, he transitioned away from real currency years ago. Now, recipients receive a "fantasy certificate" issued by the fictional Bank of San Serriffe.

The value of my reward can be represented as: Reward=0x$1.20\text{Reward} = 0x\$1.20Reward=0x$1.20

The Reporting Workflow

A Second Attempt

A few years later, I attempted to report another bug. This time, I was correct wrong.

Knuth responded with several paragraphs explaining exactly why my logic was flawed. However, within my bug report, I had included a "throwaway" sentence that he deemed a useful suggestion. Consequently, I received another check:

PAY TO THE ORDER OF: [Author]
AMOUNT: $0.32
MEMO: Suggestion Reward

Despite being wrong about the primary error, I still walked away with a small victory of 0.32 dollars.
