Thinking Will Become a Hobby
Thinking Will Become a Hobby

"These lines are very difficult for me to write because I feel like digging my own grave."
Writing this feels like an admission of obsolescence. We have moved rapidly from the clumsy early days of 2022—where ChatGPT failed at a simple task like counting the letter 'a' in a name—to a reality where internal AI models are solving hundreds of previously unsolved mathematical problems.
While some still argue that human cognition is superior due to AI's tendency toward hallucinations or inherent bias, these arguments increasingly feel like a rearguard defense. For the vast majority of cognitive labor, the conclusion is inevitable: AI will take over.
The Engines of AI Dominance
The shift toward AI supremacy in the professional world is being propelled by three primary catalysts:
- Performance: AI is advancing exponentially across perception, reasoning, judgment, and autonomous execution. Conversely, human information-processing skills are stagnating or even dropping among students and adults.
- Cost: Thanks to massive capital investment, the cost of intelligence is plummeting.
- Newer models provide better results for less money.
- Older versions are kept only for
backward_compatibility.
- Availability: AI does not require sleep or breaks. It fills gaps left by demographic declines and skill shortages, supported by trillions of dollars in planned data center expansions through 2030.
The Friction of Transition
Historically, technological shifts face resistance. However, this transition will be uniquely volatile. Previous revolutions replaced manual labor; this one targets knowledge workers. These individuals possess significant economic power and organizational authority, making them more likely to fight back.
| Era | Displaced Labor | Power Dynamic |
|---|---|---|
| Industrial Revolution | Manual/Physical | Low-leverage workers |
| AI Revolution | Cognitive/Intellectual | High-leverage experts |
Governments will likely attempt to slow this progress through taxes and regulations, but history suggests such measures rarely stop the tide of technological evolution.
From Necessity to Leisure
We are witnessing the "hobby-ization" of thought. Just as other essential survival skills became recreational pursuits, thinking will follow:
- Hunting Sport
- Calligraphy Art
- Woodworking Craft
- Horse Riding Leisure
AI is decoupling the act of thinking from its economic utility.
Preparing for the Future
Adapting to a world where AI dominates cognitive work will be an intellectually grueling and stressful journey. To survive and thrive, we must adopt a new strategy:
- Stay Current: Keep pace with and leverage AI advancements.
- Remain Fluid: Cultivate flexibility, adaptability, and psychological resilience.
- Redefine Purpose: Construct a rewarding existence that does not rely on professional labor for meaning.
Ultimately, my personal challenge is to transition from making a living by thinking to making thinking part of a life worth living.
