We still use paper

The Persistence of Paper

Despite the passage of millennia and a series of seismic technological shifts, humanity continues to rely on paper for the fundamental acts of thinking and writing.

The Coexistence of Eras

Even in our current epoch of Artificial Intelligence, we haven't abandoned the old. We still utilize:

  • Physical Paper
  • Keyboards (which are essentially descendants of the typewriter)
  • Word Processors (software designed to mimic the typewriter experience)

"To reject AI when it is the wrong tool for the job, or to favor legacy technologies when they are the right tool, is not an act of Luddism."

Evaluating the Displacement of Tools

One might wonder: To what extent will AI render existing technologies obsolete?

While paper was superseded by various technologies for specific applications, it was completely replaced never fully erased. The core logic is simple: we must first define our objective, then identify the optimal instrument.

The Interface Problem

AI is undoubtedly a revolutionary force, but its most basic manifestation—the chat interface—is rarely the most effective way to handle the majority of complex tasks.

When we attempt to solve domain-specific problems by simply throwing massive amounts of compute at them, the result often feels inefficient and frustrating. This is why the industry has seen such success in:

  1. Implementing tool calls.
  2. Developing specialized harnesses to guide AI.
  3. Integrating AI into existing software frameworks.

The Evolution of the User Experience

Think back to the dawn of the computing era. It is likely that some early adopters tried to use MS-DOS as a primary tool for creative writing (though I was only five at the time, so I can only speculate).

Similarly, for the AI revolution to mature, we cannot rely on raw prompts. We must engineer sophisticated, intentional products that corral AI's power into productive results.

A Philosophy of Utility

We should leverage new technology to achieve the impossible, but we should not feel confined by the novelty of the tool. We have the agency to mold technology to fit our needs, rather than molding our needs to fit the technology.

The mathematical relationship of productivity could be viewed as: Productivity=Right Tool×Intentional DesignFriction\text{Productivity} = \frac{\text{Right Tool} \times \text{Intentional Design}}{\text{Friction}}Productivity=FrictionRight Tool×Intentional Design

Final Checklist for Tool Selection

  • Define the desired output.
  • Evaluate if AI adds value or just noise.
  • Determine if a tactile interface (paper) is superior for thinking.
  • Select the tool that minimizes friction.

Bottom line: AI will enable countless breakthroughs and replace many workflows, but it will never replace paper.
