Libreboot 26.10 "Ominous Olive" released with UEFI, Chromebook support
Libreboot 26.10 "Ominous Olive" Now Available: UEFI & Chromebook Integration
Published by: Leah Rowe

The latest iteration of Libreboot, version (codenamed "Ominous Olive"), has been officially released. You can acquire the build via the rsync server or through various community mirrors.
What is Libreboot?
Libreboot serves as a free, open-source alternative to the proprietary BIOS/UEFI firmware typically found on ARM64, Intel, and AMD hardware. Its primary function is the initialization of critical system components—such as the memory controller and CPU—to prepare the machine for an operating system (e.g., BSD or Linux).
Major Update: Thanks to the integration of the MrChromebox EDK2 payload, Libreboot now provides full UEFI support, meaning Microsoft Windows is now compatible.
The project's core mission is the eradication of proprietary software from the boot process, prioritizing high security, deep customization, and accessibility for users who are not necessarily technical experts.
⚠️ Critical Notice for Users
This release introduces fundamental design shifts that transcend simple hardware updates.
ATTENTION: Please read the following changelog with extreme care. In fact, read it twice.
One notable addition is the inclusion of a new file within lbmk titled AGENTS.md, which outlines a strictly anti-AI policy.
Architectural Overhaul
The transition to EDK2 represents a significant pivot in how Libreboot handles payloads.
| Feature | Previous Status | Current Status (26.10) |
|---|---|---|
| Default Payload | GRUB / SeaBIOS | EDK2 (UEFI) |
| Legacy Support | Native Bare Metal | EFI-wrapped builds |
| Windows Support | Limited/Difficult | Full Compatibility |
| Bare Metal GRUB | Standard |
Payload Nuances
While EDK2 is now the standard, GRUB and SeaBIOS are still provided as EFI builds to ensure backward compatibility.
- CSMWrap: SeaBIOS is now wrapped in EFI to mimic the behavior of older Libreboot versions.
- GRUB EFI: This version functions identically to the previous coreboot-payload GRUB, including its method of reading configurations from the CBFS.
- iPXE: Remains enabled by default on specific supported boards.
Massive Chromebook Expansion
Libreboot has imported support for 233 Intel and AMD Chromebooks from the MrChromebox coreboot distribution.
Implementation Details
These boards are currently source-only, meaning no pre-compiled binaries are provided; users must build them from source. This was achieved using a custom utility located at util/mrimport/ which automates the generation of lbmk configs, submodules, and revisions.
# Conceptual workflow for importing configs
./util/mrimport/generate_configs --upstream mrchromebox --target lbmk
Customizations to the MrChromebox Base
Libreboot does not simply copy the upstream; it applies several specific modifications:
- Aesthetics: The EDK2 background is set to Libreboot purple and features the rainbow logo.
- Security: The HAP bit is enabled at build time to ensure the Intel ME (Management Engine) is disabled.
- Flash Access: The
ifdtoolis used to unlock IFD regions, making them read-write during the build process. - Hardware Specifics:
- Haswell Chromebooks: Now utilize native
raminitinstead of MRC. - Intel (up to Kabylake):
libgfxinitis used instead of GOP.
- Haswell Chromebooks: Now utilize native
Relationship with Upstream
Libreboot is not a fork of MrChromebox; rather, MrChromebox is treated as the upstream source for these devices.
Because the setup remains behaviorally compatible, the original MrChromebox installation scripts and documentation should still function correctly with Libreboot images.
AMD Fam15h Improvements
For AMD Fam15h mainboards, Libreboot has migrated to the 15h.org fork. This shift replaces custom init code with official AMD AGESA source code, resulting in:
- More stable CPU initialization.
- Fully functional IOMMU.
- Resolved TPM issues.
Final Checklist & Media
Before flashing your device, ensure you have completed the following:
- Read the
AGENTS.mdpolicy. - Verified your board is among the 233 supported Chromebooks (if applicable).
- Backed up your existing firmware.
- Confirmed if you require the deprecated bare-metal payloads (requires source build).
