The iPadOS 27 Presentation Disaster

By Teddy Svoronos | Published: October 19, 2026

⚠️ Warning to Educators and Speakers

If your professional workflow involves using an iPad for teaching or public speaking, do not upgrade to iPadOS 27.

While I usually focus my writing on pedagogical strategies, I must take a detour to address a catastrophic regression in the latest software update that effectively ruins the iPad's utility as a presentation tool.

The "Power User" Workflow

To understand why this is a problem, you have to understand how I utilize my device. My setup isn't just about showing a slide; it's a complex orchestration of data:

  • Primary Output: Writing on digital handouts via AirPlay to a projector.
  • Secondary Controls: Managing a PowerPoint deck running on a separate Mac.
  • Private Data:
    • Personal notes on specific talking points.
    • A "hit list" of students to call on.
    • Live poll results (which must remain hidden until the reveal).

This separation of what the audience sees versus what the presenter sees is the cornerstone of my teaching methodology.

The Bug: The "Screen Snap"

In iPadOS 27, Apple has fundamentally changed how AirPlay handles multiple windows. Regardless of whether you have Stage Manager enabled, the following logic now applies:

"If you tap any application other than the one currently presenting, the external display immediately snaps to a full mirror of your iPad screen."

Visualizing the Failure

This behavior is not just a nuisance; it is mildly annoying professionally devastating. If you are speaking at a major conference, having your private notes suddenly flash on a 20-foot screen is an absolute nightmare.

App-Specific Impact

The fallout varies depending on which software you are using:

ApplicationRecovery BehaviorResult
GoodNotesReturns to presenter view upon tapping backRecoverable, but jarring
PowerPointEnters a "limbo" stateMust restart presentation

For a visual example of this glitch in GoodNotes, refer to this Reddit thread.

Evolution of a Bad Feature

The transition from the previous OS version has been a move from "confusing" to "unusable."

  • iPadOS 26: The logic for which app "owned" the external screen was opaque. You basically had to swipe up to home →\rightarrow→ tap the app in the dock to force the external display to switch.
  • iPadOS 27: Apple "simplified" this. Now, the most recently touched app takes priority.

The Result: Simplicity≠Usability\text{Simplicity} \neq \text{Usability}Simplicity=Usability.

A Proposed Fix

I am not a software engineer, but the logic for a fix is straightforward. The system should prioritize the "Presenter State" over the "Active Focus State."

Proposed Logic:

if app.status == "PRESENTER_MODE":
    external_display.lock_to(app)
    until (presentation.stop() or app.quit())

In mathematical terms, the external display priority should be: Priority=Presenter Mode>Active Window\text{Priority} = \text{Presenter Mode} > \text{Active Window}Priority=Presenter Mode>Active Window

Current Status & Call to Action

I first raised this issue during a Mac Power Users podcast episode in early September (watch the video [here]), but the bug persists even in the most recent beta builds.

What you can do to help:

  • Avoid updating to iPadOS 27 if you present.
  • File a formal feedback report with Apple.

iPad Error Placeholder

I will update this post if a workaround is discovered or if Apple issues a patch. Until then, stay on iPadOS 26.
