IKEA – 3D Assembly Guide

Experience the process of assembling flat-pack furniture through an interactive 3D lens. This tool transforms traditional IKEA manuals into a digital, step-by-step visualization.

📚 The BILLY Bookcase Project

The primary example is the BILLY bookcase, reconstructed exactly as depicted in manual AA-1823127-9. The 3D simulation mirrors the original printed instructions, maintaining the same sequence, part counts, and visual perspectives.

Component Breakdown

The build consists of the following structural elements:

  • Main Frame: Two side panels, one top, and one bottom.
  • Support: A fixed center shelf and a plinth.
  • Customization: Four adjustable loose shelves.
  • Stability: A back panel (delivered folded into three sections).

Hardware Inventory

There are a total of 82 pieces of hardware required for the assembly:

ItemQuantityPurpose
Wooden Dowels16Alignment
Cam Screws12Primary Fastening
Cam Locks12Locking Mechanism
Nails18Back Panel Security
Shelf Pins16Shelf Support
Wall Brackets2Safety Anchoring
Screws2Bracket Mounting
Washers4Bracket Support

How it Works: The Mechanics

The assembly relies on a specific fastening system. When a panel is joined, the screw head enters a circular housing called a cam.

Additionally, the back panel is crucial; once nailed in, it prevents the unit from swaying racking out of square.

🛠️ The LACK Table Alternative

By pressing ⇧K or selecting the option in the menu, you can switch to the LACK side table (Manual AA-2606170-1).

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 55×55×45 cm55 \times 55 \times 45 \text{ cm}55×55×45 cm
  • Parts: 4 legs and 4 double-ended screws (Part #115980).

[!NOTE] While the official manual concludes once the legs are attached, the 3D guide adds a final step: the manual ends →\rightarrow→ flipping the table over for use.

🔍 Precision and Safety

Accuracy Metrics

The 3D model is highly faithful but not a blueprint:

  1. Exact: Part counts, assembly order, and hardware IDs.
  2. Approximate: Panel thickness, hole placement, and shelf heights (derived from the published dimensions of 80×28×202 cm80 \times 28 \times 202 \text{ cm}80×28×202 cm).

⚠️ Critical Safety Warning

DANGER: An unanchored bookcase can tip over, which can be fatal.

To prevent this, the brackets provided in Step 12 must be installed. Please note that wall plugs and screws are not included, as the hardware required depends entirely on your specific wall material.
